“Never
before have I played so many tracks by the same artist in one
night!” – Danny Tenaglia
Brought
up on a diet of hip hop, electro and 80’s synth pop, Clive
Henry and Justin Drake have helped shape the house
music movement without all the hype and fuss that surrounds
some of their peers and contemporaries. Clive was one of the
original faces on the early UK balaeric and acid house scene
as one of the countermen in London’s infamous Flying
Records shop. As well as promoting some of the best club
nights in the UK, Flying also organised club trips to Ibiza in
1989 and 1990 and moving on to Rimini, Italy, in 1991. Clive
cut his teeth DJ’ing alongside the cream of the UK’s cutting
edge such as Andrew Weatherall, Danny Rampling, Terry
Farley, Bob Jones, Darren Emerson, and Rocky & Diesel
to name a few.
Justin is the more subdued of the pair. While a fantastically
underrated DJ, he prefers the studio to the decks and can be
found behind the desk engineering for the likes of Dylan
Rhymes, Dark Boogie (Product Deluxe), Organic
Audio (Tummy Touch/Nettwerk), and has a side project with
Circulation’s Paul Davis called ATT (Anti-Trance
Terrorists).
Clive and Justin’s debut foray into the studio resulted in a
release on the UK Slip ‘n’ Slide label, and the pair
have not looked back since. Building a rapport with
influential labels such as Junior (check their Dark
Daze project on Junior offshoot label, Fuju),
Hooj and Eukatech, their impressive production
output resulted in their widely respected debut album,
Junkyard Funk. Praised by the crème de la crème of DJ
talent such as Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed &
Carl Cox, the album went on to achieve widespread acclaim
and notch up phenomenal sales. Peace Division’s trademark
tribal drums, dark edges and dubbed out grooves have also lent
the Midas Touch to a multitude of artists & labels, including
Rui Da Silva’s massive “Touch Me”, Moby’s
“Natural Blues” and X-Press 2’s summer smash with David
Byrne, “Lazy”.
On the
DJ circuit, veteran Clive and Justin can be found spinning at
some of the world’s finest nightclubs (including Fabric,
Elements, Space, DC10, Twilo and
many more). This DJ mix here took a while to compile; each
track had to really represent the Peace Division vibe, but
after months of road-testing acetates and CDRs, the guys have
put together a stimulating mix that starts with the stripped
down minimalism of Earth Dueley, slides into the
robotic vocal house of Shauna Solomon, into the dark
grooves of Katakarna’s mix of “Cocaine” and ends with
the spine tingling ‘I Have Put Out The Light’ by James
Holden.
