New York based producer/vocalist/remixer
Vicki Bell and Boston based keyboardist Peter Adams
stepped out of their day jobs and combined their influences
and energies to create Open Door, an open-ended, genre
defying merging of jazz, rock, organically danceable grooves,
electronica sensibilities and soulful classic keyboard
melodies. Originally conceived as a studio project, the pair
recorded two singles for Vicki’s HipBone imprint “Lights” and
the follow-up “Get Into You” which caught the attention of
Stevie “Sole” Middleton and Chris Harris at
Solemusic. So enthralled with the fusion of this
collaboration, Middleton convinced the duo to realize this
project into a full-length album.
Who’s Behind Door #1 reflects the
pair’s wide range of musical touchstones and reference
points. Peter Adams is a well respected and sought after
keyboardist, playing everything from jazz gigs (Hiram
Bullock, Kenwood Dennard, Julian Coryell); to blues
and R&B (Bill Sims, Mighty Sam McLain) to Broadway
shows. In more recent years, Peter has been focusing on rock
and roll and can be seen and heard with the likes of
Juliana Hatfield, Tracy Bonham and Kay Hanley (from
Letters to Cleo).
Peter’s introduction to electronic music
started as a teenager in the early eighties, playing
electronic keyboards and making 4 track recordings; writing,
programming, singing, and playing guitar and keyboards,
influenced by everything from Prince and Depeche Mode to
Kraftwerk and the Art of Noise. Later, he studied jazz
intently at the Berklee College of Music and before moved to
NYC in 1991.
HipBone Records co-founder and
producer/writer/vocalist Vicki Bell began recording and
performing live in the 80’s with Freestyle groups such as
The Girls Club (on Select/Active Records) and Three of
Hearts (on Cutting Records). This led to the same with
underground notables in New York including TUBA, World
Style Productions, Coati Mundi, Natural Flavors, Alexis P.
Suter, Glenn Turner, and Children of Planet Earth.
A dancer and singer in her own right,
Vicki’s performance break came with the completion of her
scholarship at The Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. She
starred in and toured nationally and internationally with
productions such as A Chorus Line and West Side
Story.
