Following up last year’s debut on Home Style
Cooking, Version Eternal, aka New York based DJ Nick
“Niko” Chacona, returns with another blast of skunked up,
dubby house.
Sitting somewhere between Worship and Soma and
supported by such discerning headz as Fabric residents Deep
C. and Chris Udoh (Tigerhook Corp., Philadelphia),
Dave Mothersole (KISS-FM, London), Murray Richardson
(20/20 Vision), and David Duriez (Brique Rouge, Paris),
the last VE single “Remain” featured mutant rhymer Mike Ladd
(of Infesticons fame) dropping a twisted stream of
consciousness flow over a deep, rhythmic assault and
relentless half-time dub bassline. ”Stagger” tweaked reggae
vocal samples over a wobbly, skankin' bass while dubby smoke
rings and space splashes floated in, out and all around.
Since the release of the first Version Eternal
single, Niko has honed his production skills by turning out
remixes of Cassady feat. Stacy – “Isabella Sunshine”
(as Chacona & Gold) for Esho and “This is…” by Jay
Salino (aka Aqua Bassino’s Jason Robertson) on Statra (as
Adult Contemporary).
A year on
from his debut, Niko shows a new level of maturity. “Youth of
Today” builds upon the last 12”, subtly weaving a grooving
dubby tapestry with space and ‘tings rolling underneath warm
synth pads and a smoked out Rasta vocal. “Collie” goes even
deeper, but keeps the intensity to keep the dancefloor moving.
Release
date: April, 2002
